Fast Weeknight Food—Orange Beef and Broccoli

May 6, 2014 by Tonja 3 Comments

I just bought a new wok.  And now our house smells like The Chinese Dragon.  But I don’t care because wok cooking is SO easy (you really can’t mess it up) and it gets my family fed in a hurry.  So look no further for your next fast weeknight meal.

First off, I use flank steak (Costco).  It’s a tougher cut of meat but gets tenderized with this simple marinade.  Just remember to cut against the grain and slice thin.  Next, have all your sauce ingredients on hand.  You may not have hoisin or mirin but all are readily available at the grocer.  You can make the sauce and cut the steak and broccoli ahead of time and then fire up the wok when you are ready to cook (a frying pan works too).

You’ve got your protein and veggies and a sauce that is so lip-smacking good your kids really will want to eat their broccoli.

I serve this with Jasmine rice and potstickers from Trader Joes.

Note:  If you want to spice this up, add a 1/2 tsp. of red pepper flakes to the sauce.

Enjoy!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 Tbls. soy sauce
  • 1 Tbls. cornstarch
  • 3 Tbls. mirin
  • 1 pound flank steak or tri-tip, cut in thin strips on the bias
  • 1 bunch of broccoli, cut into small florets
  • 1 tsp. salt plus more for seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp. sugar
  • 4 Tbls. canola oil
  • 2 Tbls. minced fresh ginger
  • 2 Tbls. hoisin sauce
  • 2 Tbls. honey
  • 1 Tbls. chili sauce
  • 2 Tbls. soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 3 scallions, chopped
  • 2 Tbls. toasted sesame seeds, optional

Instructions

  1. In a zip-loc bag combine the soy sauce and cornstarch, and 1 Tbls. of mirin and mix well. Slice steak against the grain in thin slices. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and place in zip-loc. Add mixture and marinate for 20 minutes in the refrigerator.
  2. Heat 2 Tbsp. oil in a wok or frying pan over high heat. Stir minced ginger into oil; stir for 1 minute; add broccoli and cook, tossing to coat, for 1 minute more. Stir in 1 tsp. salt and sugar; add 1/4 cup water and cover. Steam, lifting cover and stirring once, until broccoli is bright green and crisp-tender, 2–3 minutes. Transfer broccoli mixture to plate and set aside.
  3. Next, whisk together the additional 2 Tbls. of mirin with the hoisin, honey, chili sauce, soy sauce, and orange juice until completely combined.
  4. Add another 2 Tbls. oil to wok on high heat. Add the beef and cook for 3-5 minutes. Then add the broccoli and sauce mixture and cook for another 2 minutes on medium heat until sauce thickens. Serve on warm platter, garnish with scallions, and sesame seeds.

Thank you Tonya! I love your site and hope to some day put half as many amazing meals on my family’s table. I’ve been meaning to buy a wok….we have a vegetarian in the house and I’m thinking it would be an easy way to make both a vegetarian meal and a meal with meat. Any tips on what wok to buy?
